The French Presidency announced, on Wednesday, the exclusion of the option to repent and apologize to Algeria for the horrendous crimes of the colonial era.
This came in the first official comment after historian Benjamin Stora presented, on Wednesday, a report to French President Emmanuel Macron on the somber colonial period.
According to French media outlets, the Elysee maintained the same tone, which indicated that there would be no repentance or apology, but it intended to take symbolic steps.
It also noted that historian Benjamin Stora touched on the issue of the apologies that the Algerian authorities requested several years ago in a chapter of his report.
The latter contained a set of questions from Benjamin Stora: “Should other methods be adopted and new methods developed to reach the reconciliation of memories”?
