General Fodil Cherif, peace broker and “GIA” first enemy

The name of the late retired general Cherif Fodil was linked to the fight against terrorism, since he was the first to create a cell to fight against terrorism in mid 1990s before being appointed as the commander of the first military region till his retirement in 2005.

• The late general was one of the deal brokers of the peace truce with the head of the so called “Salvation Islamic Army”, the military wing of the disbanded Islamic party.
• Fodil Cherif sealed a peace treaty with Madani Mezrague in which it was greed upon the complete disbanding of the various terrorist organizations including the “Armed Islamic Group” and “Armed Islamic Movement”.
• Fodil cherif was assigned by the former president, Lyamine Zeroual to lead the fight against terrorism between 1994 and 1999, crowned by the elimination of the bloodthirsty armed Islamic group leader, Antar Zouabri in 2002.

• He also participated in the creation of the first core of the self defence forces in the central regions of the county, whom he was the main supervisor.
