Guantanamo Algerian detainees should sue US authorities, Ksnetini says

Algerians held at Guantanamo Bay need to take legal action against US government to claim compensation for the years they spent in jail and torture, says human rights organizaton president.

• Farouk Ksentini said some 17 out of 27 Algerians were still detained in Guantanamo on terror charges though there was no evidence against them. “They must bring an action against US authorities before returning home. The camp will be closed when US President-elect Barack Obama takes office on January 20,” he told Echorouk Wednesday.
• Earlier in November, a US judge ordered to release five Algerian-born prisoners held at Guantanamo in an unprecedented decision since the opening of the camp in 2002.
• Nearly 255 detainees remain at Guantanamao which was established to hold terror-suspects arrested after the September 11 attacks. Most of them have been detained for years without official charges.
•  Obama promised to close the prison camp to move all trials to the US mainland.
