Harkis’ sons call for French nationality

Sons of Algerian soldiers in the French colonising army during the independence war called on French authorities to grant them and their children the French nationality.

• The soldiers’ sons who did not leave Algeria after the independence allege that they suffer from difficult political, economic and social conditions. They call for benefiting from financial privileges stipulated in the February 23, 2005 French law on colonialism which triggered a political storm between Algiers and Paris.
• Associations of harkis (Arabic word for Algerians who fought alongside the French in Algeria’s independence war) in France say they contacted French authorities to meet that demand.
