Housing Manager of Algiers province to Echorouk: “Rehousing program is still underway … and violent street protests constitute a hurdle to the operation”
The Housing Manager of the province of Algiers, Mohamed Ismail, has affirmed that the rehousing operation concerning several thousand Algerian families will go beyond the year 2011 in gradual stages across several parts of the capital Algiers.
- Mohamed Ismail told Monday “Echorouk” that about 5 thousand brand-new housing units would be delivered during the first half of the year 2011 for the benefit of 5 thousand families living in derelict dwellings and dilapidated buildings in the province of Algiers.
- The official made the statement on the sidelines of the operation for the rehousing of hundreds of families from the popular district of Diar Echems in the upper municipality of Draria.
- Mohamed Ismail described the rehousing operation in Draria as a large-scale one which necessitated, he said, colossal means including one thousand lorries and over 2 thousand workers who were mobilized to give a helping hand to the recipients during the move from Diar Echems to Draria.
- Replying to our reporters’ queries about the violent street protests staged earlier this week by scores of people following the recorded delay in the delivery of their promised new housing units, Mohamed Ismail underlined that the delay was mainly due to the applicants’ failure to thoroughly complete their relevant application forms at the level of the administrative structures of their respective municipalities.
- He said that the street rampage reported over the past few days in some parts of Algiers by disgruntled people was counter-productive for the applicants themselves and could only be a hurdle to the smooth running of the ongoing rehousing operation.
