Illegal deal defaces haven of nature in Al Kala Park east of Algeria
Lake Tonga / Al Kala Park

The national Park of Al Kala, in the province of Taref, east of Algeria, has been the scene of dangerous depredations which are seriously threatening environment, rare birds and plant species there in the absence of a public authorities' intervention.

  • This case, considered a shameful scandal broke out following a tender for the exploitation of lakes there including Tonga and Abira. After the opening of the files introduced by foreigners and Algerian investors, a  local baron surprisingly won all the  relevant tenders which were submitted in contradiction with the laws and regulations in force.
  •  However, citizens in Taref know how  things happened and how the destruction plan was launched killing hundreds of plants, fish and birds in that environment of the national Park of El Kala which extends over 14 hectares along  the renowned Alabira lake. A project to protect the precious biological heritage in the region was launched and sponsored by the European Union in line with agreement n° 10903.
  • The unscroupulous baron, who used the virgin lake, brought huge mechanical shovels killing rare birds and plants which have lived there for more than 15 years ostensibly to launch a construction project inside the Park in all impunity so far.
  • This carnage against nature occurs with the silence of the local authorities and government which did not intervene to stop this outlaw and put an end to nature’s slow agony .
