Illegal immigration: Algeria counts 3000 Moroccan families living on its territories since the sixties

Over 3000 Moroccan families, living for nearly half a century West of Algeria, failed to get Algerian citizenship despite the frequent demands by 1400 workers, including employees in public institutions and departments, asking the General Secretary of the central trade union Abdelmadjid Sidi Said to help them through mediation to realize their dream of enjoying Algerian citizenship with full rights and privileges.

 

• Money earners of these Moroccan families, working in Algerian public institutions and departments west of Algeria, especially in Oran, Ain Temouchent, Mostaghanem and Telemcen, ask the local authorities to mediate for them to government in order to enable them to obtain the Algerian citizenship, as they reside with their families in Algerian soil since the sixties and seventies, and some others since the eighties.

• In this context, commander of the regional Gendarmerie battalion of Ain Turk, Reda Kebayli said that over 1200 Moroccan families live only in Ain Turk since more than 48 years and working in Agriculture and Tourism.

• “They called on Algerian government to settle their legal status in Algeria, while more than 1400 workers working in public sector west of Algeria ask for Algerian citizenship.

• Local sources told Echorouk that these families, especially money earners are forced each time to move to the Morocco in order to bring their identity documents, resulting in their suffering, which have doubled since the closure of land borders between Algeria and Morocco.

• According to the same sources, the number Moroccan families residing in Algeria since the sixties, which filed the request files to get Algerian citizenship, exceeds 3000 families that waited since years to get citizenship but failed. Only few of them got it, and the reason is that access to Algerian citizenship under the provisions of Article 26 of Order N° 05/10 of February 27, 2005, which defines the applications to acquire Algerian citizenship that must be submitted to the Minister of Justice accompanied by contracts and documents which fulfils legal requirements, and if they are not available, the Ministry of Justice announces non susceptibility of the request by sending a resolution.

• According to figures by the Mininster in Charge of the Maghreb and African Affairs, Abdelkader Msahel, the number of Moroccans living in Algeria permanently is 45.000, the equivalent to 300.000 and 500.000 people, while identical sources assert that the number of Moroccans who request Algerian citizenship increased in the last three years compared to the decade of civil war, as the Ministry of Justice received at least 500 request per year.
