Inflation in Algeria reached 4, 3% in 2008: NOS report

Algeria recorded a 4, 3% inflation rate for 11 months of 2008, says the national office of statistics ONS in a report published Monday. Inflation was expected at experts at 4, 2%. 

• The ONS said inflation rise from January to November 2008, is due to food prices increase  with 7, 3%, industrial foods with 11, 9% and fresh farm products with 2, 9%.
• The report added that manufactured products prices rose with 1, 1%, however, the prices of services rose with 2, 4% from January to November 2008.
• However potato prices fell with 25, 3%, cooking oils prices also made the largest increase estimated at 40, 5%, coffee and tea +28, 5%, fresh fish +18, 8%, poultry meat, rabbits and eggs +14, 4%, fruits +14%, vegetables +9, 2%, milk and its derivatives +7, 1% and bread and cereals +3,6%.
• This increase also included other meat products and canned fish +2, 5%, sheep meat +2, 2% and cows’ meat +0, 5%, as well as sugar and sugar products +0, 4%.
• ONS specifies that inflation rate reached 2, 5% last November compared to October 0, 5%, which is larger compared to the same period of 2007, +1%.
• The downward noticed last November was due to the rise of consumption +4, 5%, especially the prices of fresh foods +10, 1%.
• A significant increase was also recorded during November including sheep meat +8%, chicken meat +11, 3%, eggs 21, 8% and vegetables +18, 8%.
• ONS data shows that the decrease of industrial foods’ prices reached 1, 1% because of the decline in oil prices -4, 4%, as well as sugar and sugar products -2, 9%.
• The annual inflation rate fell from 29, 04% in 1994 to 3, 5% in 2007.
• The government expected inflation rate is 4% in 2008 as a result of the imported inflation. However, it is expected to reach 3,5% in 2009, which is the same percentage recorded in 2007.
