Insane high prices of construction materials threaten housing projects in Algeria

The cost to construct one square meter in a house in Algeria is now 92 percent. The cost jumped from 20,000 DA per square meter to 38,000 DA due to the insane rise of iron and cement prices.

• Iron price has reached 120,000 DA per pound at retailers while the price of one cement pound moved from 9,000 DA to 1,200 DA.

• According to reports prepared by various associations of contactors, this price rise knew a development of 20 percent.

• According to housing ministry figures, the national production of cement was approximately supposed to reach 16,5 million tons annually. This amount is sufficient to bring about projects that are under way.Yet, the interruption of many factories caused these speculations.

• As for iron production, although the ministry of industry adopted a number of measures, few weeks ago, to raise iron and steel companies’ production and demand, it was not sufficient.
