According to Zerhouni, riots which took place in Beriane on May 16th were due to some parts involved in fuelling sectarian conflicts.

The minister confirmed that foreign parts are working on destabilising the country to achieve political goals. He made the same conclusion on violent events which took place in Oran province (west of Algiers) after its football squad had fallen down to the second local league. “Parts seized the opportunity to reach their aims.”

Zerhouni blamed local associations and areas’ committees for not caring about the situation. He gave the example of Chlef province where riots took place a month ago. “There are 1,700 local associations including 286 areas’ committee associations in Chlef which did not play their role in calming down the protestors.

He revealed his ministry’s intention to review the local associations’ map with all their activities.
