An international conference, bringing together 13 Ambassadors and a host of foreign experts, is scheduled to be held next Saturday in Algiers to address the vexed illegal immigration or “Harraga†issue which is still hitting the headlines on both sides of the Mediterranean basin.

Several Algerian government members are also expected to attend this major conference which will examine the ins and outs of the issue of illegal immigration and how best it should be checked.

The national solidarity Minister Djamel Ould Abbas who is also in charge of the Algerian community overseas, recalled in this respect that the President of the Republic Abdellaziz Bouteflika had given firm instructions to the relevant authorities for the adoption of adequate measures likely to stem the rising phenomenon of illegal immigration from the southern to the northern shores of the Mediterranean basin notably to Spain and Italy.

The Minister also underlined that the illegal immigration issue had now become an international phenomenon stressing that Algeria was striving relentlessly to check it before it takes alarming proportions.
