Invitation to open depth discussions about national defense strategies

Nicholas Sarkis, president of the Arab Centre of Oil Studies, said that oil prices will reach 160 dollars before the end of this year. This increase is due to “geopolitical tensions dominating some of the world countries which produce this kind of strategic product such as Iran, Nigeria and other countries.†“They will keep oil prices high for a long time.â€

He mentioned that the rise in oil prices is normal at this period compared to energy products prices sold in Europe. Yet, it became necessary to develop alternative energy sources for oil and gas that are considered “material depleted” –according to him-.

Sarkis intervened during the fourth parliamentary days about national defence, held Saturday at the Nation Council. He said “it is impossible to reach the development of these new resources such as generated power (wind and water) if the main energy sources prices did not reach enough level to become incentive for huge necessary investments for the development of these new energies”.

For his part, the National Assembly’s speaker Abdelkader Bensaleh said the future approaches become a claim-in the framework of future developing scenarios- giving more attention to defend economy within an international environment dominated by speculation and unilateral decisions taken by multinational companies. Risks to peace and stability were doubled causing fragility of national economies.

He added that the economic as well as military and civil defences are three important pillars of the national defence. “These are sensitive and complicated subjects.”
