Italy Refuses To Use The Navy To Counter Illegal Immigration

The Italian authorities rejected a proposal to use the navy to counter the flow of Algerian illegal immigrants on the island of Sardinia, who came in small boats that were difficult to monitor with radar devices.

In the meantime, the Schengen Space Committee in the Italian Parliament is preparing to start a mission in Algeria soon, related to the file of illegal immigrants pouring into Sardinia, led by the coordinator of the far-right Northern League in Sardinia, Eugenio Zoffili.

The position of the Italian authorities came in response to the Interior Ministry’s parliamentary proposal presented by the right-wing North League, through its regional coordinator on the island of Sardinia, Eugenio Zoffili, who stated on his official Facebook page (documented page) that the Interior Ministry’s response included an assurance that the Naval forces will not be used to counter the Algerian illegal immigrants, due to the difficulty of monitoring the small boats, which are only spotted close to the shore and usually through notifications from citizens.

The politician belonging to the extreme right-wing North League, Eugenio Zoffili, considered that the response of his country’s government is not sufficient because it is necessary to activate the air and maritime surveillance of the Navy to stop the illegal immigrants who are coming to the island, especially after monitoring the new Coronavirus cases among those arriving in its shores.

“Government provides an unconvincing response. It should deploy the navy to deal with the boats of the Algerians heading to Sardinia, and to activate effective diplomatic steps from Rome towards Algeria”, Eugenio Zoffili added.

Eugenio Zoffili spoke about a diplomatic mission that he will undertake to Algeria at the head of the Schengen Space Committee in the Italian Parliament (the House of Representatives and Senate), which will address the file of the flow of Algerian illegal immigrants to Sardinia and ways to stop it, as stated by the same politician on his official Facebook page.
