Constantine- A joyful atmosphere and intense activity around clothes shops for the inevitable Eid el Fitr and school year beginning shopping, are being noticed during the last evenings of Ramadan in Constantine, east of Algeria.

The city, where Ramadan is exceptional because of the amazing image of ancient streets, bridges and houses which were built by many civilizations, got invaded by parents accompanied by their children, for the inevitable, and ruinously expensive new clothes of El Eid after the Iftar, the Isha and Tarawih prayers.

Eid el Fitr, is a Muslim holiday and celebration that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Eid is an Arabic word meaning “festivity”, while Fiá¹r means “to purify”; and so the holiday symbolizes the purification after completing the fasting month which is after the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan, on the first day of Shawwal.

Typically, Muslims wake up relatively early in the morning—always before sunrise— offer Salatel Fajr, clean one’s teeth with a Miswaak or a brush, take a shower(ghosl) after Fajr, put on new clothes or the best available, and apply perfume.

It is haraam to fast on the Day of Eid. That’s why it is recommended to have a small breakfast (as a sign of not being on a fast on that day) of sweet dish preferably the date fruit, before attending the special Eid prayer (salah). It is a Sunnah that the Sadaqat-el-fitr, an obligatory charity, is paid to the poor and the needy before performing the ‘Eid prayer by all those adult muslims who are required to pay Zakat. Muslims recite the following Takbir in the low voice while going to the Eid prayer: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha ilal lahu wal Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lilla hil hamd.
