Joyful celebrations mark Arab and Muslim communities in USA: Shocked Americans use Google to know Qatar

Nights of celebrations in Qatar following its successful bid to host World Cup 2022 raised disbelief among nations who failed in bid to host World Cup, including USA.

Although soccer is not among popular sports in America, but the loss of eligibility in hosting the World Cup is considered by some people as an insult to the great potential and infrastructure of USA compared to Qatar.

Americans hurry to use search websites to find out information about this small country which defeated the United States.

As several websites and newspapers alluded that Qatar’s successful bid was a result of a big deal behind closed doors, and many commentators on TV channels use sarcastic comments to express their astonishment following Qatar’s victory over the U.S. Australia, South Korea and Japan files in the first voting stage.

The Atlantic:  Why America Lost the World Cup Hosting Bid

This question raised by the U.S. website “The Atlantic” to explain that for the third time in five years, the U.S. fell short in a bid to host a global sporting event. The most recent disappointment—Thursday’s failure to win the bidding for the 2022 World Cup—is particularly galling because America lost to Qatar. For serious. The country with a soccer program ranked 113th in the world will host soccer’s version of the Olympics, instead of the country where soccer has the most potential to grow.

Same website said that the FIFA decision raises a host of logistical and sporting questions Will FIFA survive hosting consecutive Cups in South Africa, Brazil, Russia, and Qatar without a major security incident? How can a World Cup take place in a country where drinking is restricted and it’s illegal to be gay?) The larger issue is that the precipitous decline of America’s global standing has led to it being shut out of hosting global sporting events.

The degree of regret led the author to say “America will be the proud host of the 2026 World Cup or 2030 Winter Olympics. If not, there are 195 countries in the world. It could be a while before the powers that be get around to us again” in a veiled reference to the defeat before Qatar.

Kansas City.com: “No Cup, no crying: Let’s get back to Sporting KC business”

In another article full of contempt for Arabs and Qatar, Kansas City.com reporter said “No use crying over spilled bags of oil money” using a language filled with hatred he describes Qatar a stinking incident “   We’ve got 12 more years to make jokes about Qatar (is it pronounced “KA-tar” or “ku-TAR” or “kutter” or “KEY-tar”?), in a clear reference to the smell of the tar.

Large news agencies in USA only reported the news without any comments in the first hours, while the majority of Americans, who do not know anything about Qatar, rushed to find information about this small and rich country using net search, and most of the TV Channels and websites used Google map and Google Erath strategy to help them find this country.

Arab and Muslim communities did not believe what happened and expressed surprise following Qatar’s successful bid saying that it is a historical victory for all Arabs and Muslims everywhere.

Obama: FIFA made the “wrong decision”

The American heavy loss pushed the U.S. President to interfere saying, “Fifa made the “wrong decision” on Thursday when selecting Qatar over an American bid to host the 2022 World Cup in what will be a major setback for football in America”.

“I think it was the wrong decision,” Obama said at the White House, joining thousands of disappointed Americans who watched the announcement from Zurich, where a video message from him had been part of the US presentation.
