Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, Mr. Farouk Ksentini

Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, Mr. Farouk Ksentini, suggested replacing the temporary custody in some cases, with the judicial control.

Ksentini added in the report that was raised to the President of the Republic, that the proposal came in the context of improving the conditions of confinement, which he described as miserable.

In his phone conversation with Echorouk, the professor Ksentini asserted on Saturday that the procedures relating to temporary imprisonment in Algeria are shameful, as they sometimes described as an act of arbitrariness, because they exceed in many cases six months, although the law in effect prevents that, calling to act wisely in the issues that really deserve this kind of judicial decisions, noting that there is no serious reason to keep some detainees in prison, particularly regarding cases of assault and battery, fraud or drug consumption, which are, as described by Ksentini as simple. ‬

“I received several complaints about bad insurance of the detainees, by depriving them of contacting their families over the 48 hours, and the lack of empowerment of some necessities, investigations are underway at the level of security centers, which are often false, given that respondents, who work under the influence of pressure by investigative agents, making them confess to acts which they did not commit. I am calling for the need to respect freedoms and seek to engage the presumption of innocence ‭in investigations ‭to the main personal freedoms of ‭the citizen”. ‬
