A 25 year-old Algerian student who was on his way to Egypt was arrested last month by Libyan border security guards and is being held in custody in the capital Tripoli for yet unspecified reasons.

According to the Tlemcen-based family of Hachemi Fouad, their son left last February the city of Oran on board a car bound for Cairo where he was expecting to follow theology courses from an eminent Muslim Egyptian scholar namely Mohamed Said Raslane.

Fouad’s brother told Echorouk newspaper that they had learnt from a third party that the young Algerian traveller was held by the Libyan police as he was about to cross into Libyan territory.
He indicated that Fouad had all the necessary travel documents in order including a valid passport, a visa and an amount of money in hard currency.

He explained that Fouad’s family was shocked and revolted at his detention in Libya stressing that their son’s criminal record was blank.

They pointed out that the arbitrary arrest over a month ago for obscure reasons by Libyan police was contrary to the law and the humanitarian conventions.

They appealed in this respect, to the Libyan authorities to order the release of their innocent son at the earliest possible time because their ordeal was gruelling, as they put it.
