Lawyers:Bouteflika’s term will not be extended in constitutional amendment

Lawyers said Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will have to amend the Constitution partially as the presidential elections will be held soon.

Others believe that the president can run for office for a fourth term even if the Constitution stipulates that the president’s term can be renewed one time only.

Former president of Parliament’s legal affairs committee Messaoud Chihoub said Bouteflika had announced a deep constitutional amendment in 2011’s reforms.

Former vice-president of the committee Hocine Khaldoun said the changes will be made to the country’s status including the creation of the vice-president and the head of government positions.

He believes that the next constitution will give the president the possibility to run for a fourth term.
