Medelci appointed as Constitutional Council President

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika Sunday appointed former foreign minister Mourad Medelci as President of the Constitutional Council to succeed Taib Belaiz who was nominated as interior minister.

Medelci is the only minister who was assigned to accomplish other missions. The law stipulates that the Constitutional Council’s President has a six-year-term while Belaiz has been on the head of the Council for a year only.
Amar Rekhila, former member of the Constitutional Council said President Bouteflika has the prerogative to appoint a new president for the Council or extend the current president’s term.
The Constitutional Council is in charge of deciding in laws conformity, examining the files of candidates who run for office, checking the transparency of elections result and keeping watch on candidates’ expense.
