Holders of university degrees can be banned from military service in Algeria only after consulting a specialist at a military hospital, according to a ministerial order published in the Official Journal on Monday.

The new order which is expected to come into force on Tuesday stipulates to assign local medical committees to issue reports on graduates’ health eligibility for military service.

Each committee across the country must include a military surgeon general, three doctors and a secretary in military health departments.

One and a half years of national military service is compulsory for males.
