Milk crisis threatens Algeria if powder milk reaches higher prices
Abdelouahab Ziani, Head of the National Confederation of Milk Producers said Algeria is very comfortable in the financing of the national market with milk because the prices of milk powder dropped significantly on the international market and are now estimated at $2.800 per ton, meaning that the government’s subsidized support for milk will be the same because the producers can buy it at that price.

“However, the Government must expedite the review of the strategy to support the farmers and producers, because if milk prices return to their rise on the global exchange market, there would be an other milk crisis, and in order to avoid such a problem, the government must exploit the current circumstances and take precautionary steps”, Mr Ziani warned.

Ziani told Echorouk the government’s strategy to support milk producers encourages the European farmers allowing them to produce more milk and to export at will it to Algeria.

“This situation does not encourage the Algerian producers, because of the complexities and difficulties in producing this vital product”, he added.
