Mines smuggling attempt foiled west of Algeria

Algerian security forces Tuesday foiled an attempt to smuggle 183 anti-personal mines containing TNT in Tlemcen province (west of Algeria), according to the National gendarmerie.

  • The mines were carried on 2 motorcycles heading to bomb making workshops belonging to the terrorist Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) based in Boumerdes (50 km east of Algeria), said the same source.
  • Four of the smugglers led by a Moroccan national were arrested while two are still on the run.
  • This is the 5th seizure of its kind carried out  by the National Gendarmerie forces in Tlemcen in less than a year.
  • A total of 134 mines were seized in less than 2 weeks in eastern Algeria.
