Moroccan media sources announced that the Moroccan security forces last week sacked the Royal gendarmerie officer of the border city of Ouadjda and started legal action against him on charges of drug trafficking.

  • The convict was hiding a huge quantity of drug and money estimated at some 135 billion Moroccan Dirhams most likely garnered from its illegal business. 8 other officers were busted for being part of the network specialized in drug smuggling and money laundry.
  • According to some Moroccan sources, this operation comes as part of a vast campaign launched by the Moroccan security forces against drug traffickers especially among its security bodies, following several scandals one of them dates to the last summer when top Royal security officers were arrested on charges of drug contraband. But other parties accuse the Moroccan authorities of being rather complacent with theses traffickers and didn’t engage concrete actions fight against this illegal traffic.
  • They do not exclude the possibility of the Algerian authorities’ move to tighten security on its borders with Morocco, was the cause behind the arrest of this of this band of traffickers. Investigations revealed that the colonel was leading a network that smuggled drug through Algeria in coordination with a Moroccan ones and extended its activities to Libya and Egypt.
