Moroccan sugar is imported from Israel and smuggled to Algeria
Quantities of sugar seized in Algeria’s borders with Morocco have been going down for the last few weeks. Markets in the province of Meghnia (west of Algiers) relied on smuggled sugar from Morocco. Its price remained low though the global crisis had an impact on sugar price in the world.

A security source told Echorouk the decrease in sugar seizures is due to its price stability in Algeria. “The phenomenon may come back again as the fasting month of Ramadan is coming. Sugar price may go up once again as it will be more demanded in this period.”

Earlier last week, border guards seized 120 kg of sugar in the area of Sidi Boudjnane. The National Gendarmerie forces in the province of Tlemcen seized 2,597 kg of sugar in January-May.

A Moroccan newspaper said Morocco signed a contract with an Israeli company to provide it with 100 tons of sugar at interesting price.

Many Israeli products are smuggled to Algeria from Morocco. Some of them are made in Israel. Morocco is ranked tenth in Africa for economic transactions with Israel with $20.9 million following South Africa and Egypt which are ranked first and second with $458.7 million and $404.9 million each. They are followed by Nigeria, Kenya, Botswana, Ethiopia, Cameroon and Uganda.
