Morocco rejects Gaza convoy through borders without Algerian authorisation

Member of the popular committee and coordinator between the Arab Maghreb countries’ commissions Abderrezak Mokri denied rumours launched by the president of the National Action Group to Support Iraq and Palestine Khaled Sofiani that Algerian authorities refused to open borders to Gaza aid convoy.

“Algeria’s authorities gave a verbal approbation, a few days ago, about the opening of borders with Morocco temporarily to allow Gaza aid convoy to enter and to go to Libya, then to Syria,” Mokri told Echorouk.

He added that the State Minister Personal Representative of the President of the Republic told former British deputy George Galloway Algeria will open the borders.

The first aid convoy entered through the Algerian Moroccan borders following a verbal approbation from the Algerian authorities. Yet, Sofiani rejected this verbal form and asked the Algerian authorities to give him an official approbation through the Algerian embassy. He told Moroccan and international media Algeria prevented him from passing by its borders.

The rumours came as the Algerian Popular Committee had decided to join to the European convoy from London as Algeria is the only Maghrebin country to participate in the first Freedom Flotilla. Yet, Sofiani asked Algeria to represent the Arab Maghreb after the joining of Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania and Morocco to the Algerian convoy. Then, he changed his mind and refused to enter Algeria.

Observers believe that the decision is due to political reasons and has nothing to do with the aid convoy.
