Morocco's “Makhzen” in tight corner after Echorouk's fact-finding assignment report in occupied Sahraoui town of Dakhla (Part 3)
Writer and journalist Anouar Malek

It should be noted that I have in my possession several photographs of people living in the occupied town of Dakhla and who have openly pleaded for the self – determination of the Sahraoui people.

  • For obvious security reasons, these pictures have never been published to preclude, of course, serious problems for these witnesses.
  •
  • There have been also attempts by the Moroccan Makhzen to discredit me in the eyes of the public opinion.
  •
  • Once I am presented as a writer opposed to the Algerian regime and another time as a rebel who doesn’t want to back up the Moroccan positions anymore and who henceforth refuses to play the Makhzen’s game by propagating its ideas in the North African region.
  •
  • This attitude stems from the fact that once in the past I criticized the Polisario Front.
  •
  • This was immediately construed as an implicit support for Morocco despite the fact that I had never asserted that the Sahara was Moroccan.
  •
  • On this very point, I defy the Makhzen to bring any truthful evidence that I am opposed to the Sahraoui people’s legitimate claims.
  •
  • And if I was brought once in the past to criticize the Polisario Front, this doesn’t at all mean that I disregard the sacred character of its legitimate struggle for self – determination and the holding of a fair and transparent referendum to test the will of the oppressed Sahraoui people.
  •
  • But in case the Sahraoui people expressed their will to integrate Morocco, I would only bless their will. Contrariwise I could only but back them up.
  •
  • My conviction got bolstered at the end of may stay among the Sahraouis. Without the shadow of a doubt, Morocco does not want a self – determination referendum.
  •
  • That’s why Morocco strives every time to put forth other alternatives but to no avail only because for all fair – minded and freedom – loving peoples around the world Western Sahara is to all intents and purposes a pure decolonization issue.
  •
  • Likewise, I was brought to denounce several times the human rights’ abuses in Ghaza on the part of certain elements of the security apparatus of Hamas and even on the part of the Palestinian authorities in Ramallah as regards the prisoners’ detention conditions.
  •
  • On the Al Jazzera channel, in the program “El Itidjah El Mouâakess”, I did not waver to also criticize Lebanon’s Hizbollah.
  •
  • But this doesn’t mean for that matter I back Zionism and its heinous crimes committed against the valiant Palestinian people!
  •
  • As a matter of fact, the Moroccan authorities have many times exploited and distorted my declarations to the press for unavowed reasons.
  •
  • However, one thing is just clear for me, I should emphasize that I have never backed a regime which suppresses the popular will and aspirations and I have never made any distinction in matters of human rights’ violations anywhere in the world and in particular those committed by Morocco which systematically practices in occupied  western Sahara torture, arbitrary detention, rape and other serious offenses harming human dignity…
  •
  •                                                                             To be continued…
