Morocco's Return To The Africa Union Depends On Its Recognition Of Polisario

Prime Minister, Abdelmalek Sellal, is presiding the Algerian delegation that will participate in the African Union summit, which will be held by the end of the month, in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Most important file in this summit is Morocco’s return to the AU, as the Saharawi President, Ibrahim Ghali said in an interview with APS: “The summit will examine the Moroccan request to join the union, and if things are actually sure about the Moroccan regime’s will to join it unconditionally, with respecting the Constitutive Act with all its clauses, then the summit will decide to accept or deliberate or reject its return”.

“We need to cling to the Charter of the African Union and the defense of its sacredness at the next summit. We hope that this step will be followed by courageous steps by the Moroccan regime, including the final recognition of the sovereignty of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic on all borders, that are internationally recognized, and that to serve the stability, security and peace of the African continent.”

“We hope that Morocco will contribute to maintain the unity of the continent by respecting the founding charter, and respect the countries’ borders and sovereignty, including the Sahrawi Republic, and have a positive role in the continental organization. We are all friendly countries, and we will go to the next AU summit strongly and boosted by African law, the African Charter and the spirit of shared vision for African countries, because the unity of the continent and its weight and development is the primary concern”.

Saharawi President’s quiet remarks came in response to the allegations that Morocco consistently expressed through its politicians and journalists in the recent period, including the fact that “The Kingdom’s accession to the African Union, does not mean recognizing the SADR, which he described as the imagined Republic-“, under an insubstantial pretext, “We do not recognize them”, which is a violation of the charters of the African Union, which confirmed that all members of the union are obligated to recognize the sovereignty of the Member States, and limits, noting that the borders that are claimed by Morocco over the occupation of the Western Sahara territories that are not recognized by the United Nations, and a few days ago Washington shocked its ally “Morocco”, when it confirmed that it has no sovereignty over the territory of Western Sahara, and all those issues that are stipulated in the AU Charter, and which explicitly state “The commitment to defend the sovereignty and integrity of Member States, and the lack of an article that talks about the expulsion of a member of the Union, with the exception of the Article 30, which speaks about the suspension of membership in case of military coups or the like”.

To give some of the “glare” to the participation of Morocco, its delegation that is led by King Mohammed VI, whose father withdrew in 1984 from the Organization of African Unity, claiming the recognition of the SADR, and then Morocco claimed, on the tongue of its Foreign Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar, that Morocco has obtained a quorum, which qualifies it to join the African Union, which includes 28 countries, but more of it, he claimed that 40 African countries are in favor of Morocco’s accession, despite that all the evidence confirms that the UK’s allies in the black continent do not exceed five.

Algerian PM will defend the country’s firm position of the Western Sahara cause, considering it an issue of decolonization that was discussed several times at the United Nations, as this country has never opposed Morocco’s accession to the African Union, provided that it should respect the regulations of the African Commission.
