New traffic law: Algeria imposes 50,000 DZ fine on drivers
Parliament Tuesday passed a law on traffic stepping up sanctions and fines.
According to the new text, fines and sanctions will be imposed on drivers who violate traffic rules.
First degree infraction is related to documents and car equipment inconformity. Its fine is set at 2,000 DZ. Crossing continued lines and anarchical car parking are considered as a second degree infraction. Its fine is set at 2,500 DZ.
Third degree infraction is related to seat belts and its fine is set at 3,000 DZ.
Prohibited manoeuvres in railways, driving cars without lights, using mobile phones and headphones are considered as a fourth degree infraction. Its fine is set at 5,000 DZ.
Drivers who exceed allowed speed by 30 percent and more will have to pay a fine between 10,000 DZ and 50,000 DZ.
People who drive vehicles carrying loads of more than 3,500 KG will be sentenced to six months or two years in prison and have to pay a fine between 10,000 DZ and 50,000 DZ.
If drivers do not pay fines within 45 days, a report will be addressed to the Public Prosecutor. The fine will be raised to 3,000 DZ for first degree infractions, 4,000 DZ for second degree infractions, 6,000 DZ for third degree infractions and 7,000 DZ for fourth degree infraction.
