Nigerien capital hosts 7th International African Fashion Festival

The Niger capital, Niamey, is poised to host the 7th edition of the international African fashion festival (FIMA) from October 25 to November 1st this year, along the Niger riverside of Gorou Tchirey in the presence of designers and cultural and tourism operators from many countries.

  • The festival organising committee, commissioned this week, will “soon” adopt the roadmap to host that edition, which falls ten years after the one of Tiguidit in 1998, and the editions of 2000 in Gorou Kirey, of Boubon in 2003, Karey Gorou in 2005 and that of Niamey in 2007.
  • According to Oumarou Hadary, the Niger Minister of Culture, FIMA is a “harbinger event in Sub-Saharan Africa that highlights the existence of vast cultural, tourism and craft potentials, while offering excellent opportunities to develop a real industry of clothing”.
  • Niger, he said, is ready to take advantage of the resources offered by the festival to “ensure the blooming of its culture that is still not well-known abroad and to add value to its economic growth”.
  • FIMA, which is a tourist and fashion event, was launched in 1998 by Niger fashion designer Seydanli Ahmed, better known as Alphadi, who intends to make this event « a big economic meeting between buyers and sellers » of crafts and fashion products.
