Obama’s special envoy: Washington is not anxious concerning the Algerian nuclear program
Susan F. Burk

The US president’s special envoy has yesterday ended her visit to Algeria after conferring with senior Algerian officials and discussed with them the question of supporting the charter against the proliferation of nuclear weapons, as part of an African tour aiming at preparing a conference for the revision of this charter due to take place on May in New York.

  •
  • Talking yesterday in a press conference at the US embassy here in Algiers, Susan F. Burk has revealed that she met several Algerian officials in the Energy and Mines ministry and Foreign affairs one since her coming last Saturday, adding that she came up with the conclusion that the US and Algerian officials “share the same view on the issue and they are forging ahead for persuading all the countries to sign this charter in order to reach stability and avoid another nuclear war in the world or another competition for a nuclear armament that would undermine the world’s safety, that couldn’t be guaranteed without a consolidation of the IAEA prerogatives”.
  •
  • Susan F. Burk has indicated that Washington “ is not worried about the Algerian nuclear program”, expressing her total support in this field hinting at the nuclear cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in June 2007. She has indicated that the attempt to sway the reluctant countries to sign this charter is based on three pillars: stop the nuclear weapons proliferation, disarmament and support the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
  •
  • Obama’s special envoy has stresses that the United States is aiming at reassuring the reluctant countries especially that 189 nations have ratified the charter. The US , she added, is looking forward to giving a new impetus likely to propel the agreement into the right direction, denying allegations which say that the visit to Algeria aims at brokering a mediation with Iran concerning its nuclear program.
  •
  • Susan F; Burk went on saying that the diplomatic ties between Algeria and US are irreproachable, stressing on the fact that the nuclear file remains the main prerogative of the International Atomic Energy Agency, as she put it.
  •
  • Replying to a question concerning the US focus on the Iranian and Pakistani nuclear programs while it disregards the Israeli nuclear arsenal that threatens the very stability of the while region, Susan Burk has rejected the accusations against her country saying that Washington is looking forward to convincing all the countries including Israel.
  •
  • However, she avoided talking about the process to be used by Obama’s administration to convince Israel to do so, while a large scale campaign is launched against Pakistan to abandon its program and serious threats to resort to a military action against Iran if it continues the enrichment of its uranium.
