Algerian nationals who are imprisoned in Guantánamo are subject to permanent follow-up by the Algerian authorities with their US counterparts, and it was agreed to launch procedures for the deportation of prisoners to Algeria, Justice Ministry said in a press statement, on Sunday, which copy is available to Echorouk.

“Two Algerians are still in Guantánamo detention, after their number was 26 in 2006. In 2006 an Algerian official delegation moved to the naval base in Guantánamo, and verified that there are 26 Algerians among the detainees.”

Previously, Justice Minister, Tayeb Louh, said in December 2015, that among the 26 prisoners, justice considered 18 peoples’ files, and eight others have not been deported to Algeria, and among the 18 mentioned, 17 of them were directly deported to Algeria, and the last person, who holds dual citizenship voluntarily returned to Algeria after he was deported to another country.

With regard to the other eight person, whose identities were identified, six of them – including 5 who have dual nationalities- were deported to different countries, while two Algerians are still in detention in Guantanamo Bay.

Justice Ministry’s statement came after the call by the Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights for the Algerian authorities to reveal the true number of Algerian detainees at “Guantanamo”, as it said that their number is not exact.
