The media cell of the national gendarmerie recorded about 200 cases in relation with sex crimes in all its forms against children, including 95 cases related to indecent sexual acts against innocent children, 23 cases of rape and 74 cases of inciting minors into prostitution, as well as the registration of cases of children abduction and sexual assault.

• The most dangerous thing, according to the national gendarmerie, 50 cases are related to sexual abuse on children, which needs development of the religious and moral sense in children in order to avoid spread of the these phenomena that are difficult to control and that represent the cause behind 200 children who were subjected to sexual abuse, including 113 girls and 76 boys.

• Gendarmerie services also show the involvement of children in criminality, 1111 children were involved in the most dangerous and ugliest crimes which lead to execution, such as intentional murder in which 11 children were involved and 10 adolescents involved in arms trade. 248 children involved in theft and 165 involved in physical assault and 120 children were involved in illegal immigration.

• This dangerous situation of the Algerian children shows the dramatic pictures of innocent children who turned to dead bodies thrown by the sea waves.

• Gendarmes recorded 700 cases in which children were involved in various types of attacks including intentional beating, threat, theft and kidnapping.

• 106 teenagers were also involved in forming criminal gangs which were behind theft of cars and houses after they became professionals in arms and drugs trade, in which 48 children were involved.

• As for the sexual crimes, 80 children are involved in indecent acts and 4 cases of rape as well as crimes of breaching public discipline.

• There are 20.000 homeless children in the Algerian streets, including 21children with unknown identity, mostly less 14, who are exposed to daily violence, sexual abuses and exploitation in criminality.

• Professor Mostapha Khayati, head of National Association to Promote Health and Develop Research told Echorouk that Algeria is living a legal vacuum in the field of childhood, particularly with the exacerbation of kidnapping and sexual abuses which exceed over 200 cases since the beginning of 2009.

• “The national bureau of the right of children, which includes 300 associations to defend children’s rights proposed the initiative to establish the Maghreb (North African) network for the childhood rights, which will launch its work end of 2009. It also includes all the associations and bodies that defend children’s rights in the Maghreb countries and it will work in coordination with each others to develop a unified strategy to give effect to the rights of children in the real life”.

• “The national tragedy left one million shocked children in Algeria; only 5% of them have been transferred to psychological treatment. The national body to promote health and develop research conducted a study on 1200 children from Beraki, Sidi Moussa and Calitous, in Algiers, including 120 adults and 413 adolescents of 15, who were victims of violence and trauma during the black decade, 50% of whom were put under psychological treatment, now they are youngsters, however, they still have symptoms of trauma and neurological problems, which made of them more vulnerable to psychological disorders. 48% of these children have parents who suffer from trauma”, he says.

• Head of the Algerian Association to Stop Literacy “Ikra” (read), Aicha Berkati, said 10% of the total Algerian children do not benefit from studies, as well as 200.000 children who are not registered in schools and 500.000 children leave their schools because of the bad social conditions.

• Statistics on the phenomenon of school drop for the sixth year primary school children, show about 7.73% of the total Algerian pupils do not go school; the volume reaches 8% for the middle schools and 23% for the final years of the middle schools.
