Over 12 000 retired re-employed in Algeria

Some 12,332 employees in Algeria’s public sector have reached the retirement age but they are still holding their positions, according to the general department of civil service.

• The civil service department’s figures show that the “retirement eligible employees” are more than 60 years old while the Algerian law forces employees to quit at 60 or after 32 years in job.  
• On the other hand, some of the “old” executives renew their job contracts as it allowed by the law. Most of them are well-paid and hold important positions at administrative and public institutions.    
• Unemployment is one of Algeria’s social problems. It touches both educated and non-educated people due to demographical growth and a lack of economic opportunities.
• Unemployment rose up to 13.8 percent in 2007 compared to 12.3 percent in 2006, according to Algeria’s Office of Statistics.
