Parliament office saves Khalida Toumi from facing MPs
Khalida Toumi, Algeria's culture minister

Parliament office overturned an oral question by deputy of the Movement of National Reform, Mohamed Boudebouze, to the Culture Minister, Khalida Toumi, about giving explanations on the dangerous statements that were attributed to her, which content offend Islam and Muslims, because she described pilgrimage and prayer using disgraceful descriptions.

MNR deputy told Echorouk on Monday that he did not yet receive an official justification from the council’s office which explains the causes of rejecting his question, but he threatened of escalating the situation if initiatives of MPs will be overturned again, without explaining the nature of reaction that he will do after he will be officially informed about the decision.
“The council’s office should have let the question reach the sessions’ room, because an oral question is a constitutional right. Parliament office accessed its powers, after it started in limiting the MPs freedom”.
“There is an obstruction of the work of MPs, and if the situation will continue without providing subjective explanations to overturning my  oral question, or if the office confirmed arbitrariness and bias to the minister, it will resort to escalation. The matter is related to the people’s beliefs that should be respected, and the minister got credibility from this people, therefor she should not insult it and curse its principles. If she was a normal citizen I could not ask her. I am against the atonement logic, whether from Azhar or Zaitouna or Imams of TV channels, but I want the respect of our people”.
Khalida Toumi statements were mentioned in a book by a French writer “Elizabeth Shamla”, which interviewed the Culture Minister in 1995, titled “Khalid Mesaoudi, a standing woman”, in which she talked about issues on religious practices, and which were published again recently raising large controversy.
