Political parties and students call to lift ban on demonstrations in Algiers
Political parties and students’ unions in Algeria called on the government to authorise a peaceful manifestation in the capital in protest at Gaza attacks.

Leader of Workers’ party Louisa Hanoune said there is there is no longer a reason to forbid manifestations in Algiers.

The government banned demonstrations in 2001 following bloody clashes between security forces and protestors in a demonstration organised by Berber activists.

Fateh Rabie, Secretary General of Ennahda told echourouk his party called for authorizing a manifestation in Algiers to reduce tensions among Algerians over Israeli massacre in Gaza.

Protesters had taken to the streets in several provinces in Algeria but they were stopped by security forces. Some of them were arrested.

Hundreds of students had gathered at a number of universities and voiced their anger over Gaza deadly attacks. Some 25 of them including six Palestinians were arrested.
