Power outages forced several bakeries to close in Algiers

Power is interrupted three to four times a week for more than an hour and half and generally between 9 and 11 pm. This period of time is crucial for bakers because they chose this moment to prepare their dough.

A baker revealed to “Echourok” that he was forced to throw way a big quantity of dough because it turned acid due to power outage, avoiding transforming it into bread because of hygiene control services and the boycott of the consumers.

The bakers’ Union has indicated that among the 1500 bakeries in Algiers, many were forced to release their employees a month prior the holy Ramadhan (fasting) where the demand on this product reaches its peak.

Bakeries in Algiers and its surrounding are witnessing long queues of citizens who flock in to get their bread, especially in the morning, while some shops that sale a traditional type of bread are overwhelmed by clients despite a relatively high price.
