President Abdelaziz Bouteflika chaired an assessment meeting on water resources sector
As part of the annual auditions he heads on activities of various ministerial departments, President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, chaired an assessment meeting on water resources sector.

During this meeting, Water Resources Minister outlined the global situation of the sector by presenting a report on 2010 achievements as well as the launch of five-year development programme 2010-2014. The year 2010 recorded the delivery and start of several important achievements and facilities like seven new dams having an additional capacity of more than one billion m3.

The dams are located in Koudiat Acerdoune (Bouira), Boussiaba (Jijel), Kissir (Jijel), Douéra (Alger), Bougous (El-Tarf), Saf-Saf (Tébessa) and Kerrada (Mostaganem).

Two big water transfers and six adductions of drinking water were also brought into service. Two desalination plants of seawater with a capacity of 300,000 m3/day at Skikda and Beni Saf (Ain Temouchent) were completed.

Sewage treatment plants in five cities of Ain-Turk (Oran), El-Eulma (Setif), Annaba, Mila and Saida were brought into service.

Speaking at the end of the sector assessment, the President noted the undeniable progress by the country in the mobilization of water resources to fulfill the population’s need in this area. He also called for further efforts; “Water is the foundation of all civilizations and development especially in a semi-arid country like Algeria, submissive chronically on water stress and climatic hazard”.

“These results in terms of water supply and sanitation are all grounds for encouragement for further modernization and expansion of networks to provide all citizens the same water utility”.
