Presidential burial to the late president Chadli Benjedid
The former Algerian president Chadli Benjedid died yesterday at the age of 83 after a long illness that put him into a deep coma following a sudden heart attack. He was evacuated to the military hospital here in Algiers and put under the intensive care unit.
The body of the late president was transported to his home in the upscale compound of “Poirson” to give the opportunity to the officials, war veterans, diplomats and plain citizens to extend their condolences to his family.
The third Algerian president will be buried at “Al Alia” cemetery with the presence of the current president Abdelaziz Bouteflika and other high ranking officials as well as prominent personalities that worked with him as a military officer or while in office.
The late president will lay in state at the People’s Palace her in Algiers so that the public can see and honor him before his burial.
Many Heads of State and other high ranking officials are set to pay a last tribute to the former president.
- The death of the third Algerian president since the independence of the country coincides with the 24 anniversary of the youth revolution of October 1988, who reshaped the political and social life of Algeria and a month before the release of his memoirs slated for the 58 anniversary of the outbreak of the Algerian revolution in November 1, 1954.
Chadli Benjedid was the ministry of defence in 1978 before holding office from 1979 to 1992 after the death of the late president Houari Boumedienne in Decmber 1978. He was born in the tiny locality of Boutheldja , the province of Taref, in 1929.

The late president conducted a series of reforms that tore down the single party system and gave birth to multiparty one that led to the writing of the new constitution of 1989.
