Preventive measures to protect El Kala park from Algeria East-West motorway

A set of scientific measures for environment protection and promotion were taken by Algerian public works ministry as part of the East-West motorway which would pass through El Kala park.The measures were based on a scientific study to determine ecological impacts of the road. The National Observatory for control and follow up environment management is in charge of implementing those measures.

For his part, Algerian public works minister Ammar Ghoul has ordered to replanting 2,000 hectares of forest areas instead of the planned 120 hectares.

The public works ministry has also provided international technical assistance for controlling and approving environment-related studies.

The government has not made any change on the century’s motorway project which will pass through the park as it is part of a road network across the Maghreb. If the road does not pass through the park, it will have to pass through mountainous area. That would cost 150 billion Algerian dinars.
