Private Algerian operators set to import meat from Sudan in utter secrecy
Well-informed sources told Echorouk that a number of private Algerian economic operators are set to import sizable quantities of meat from Sudan in utter secrecy.
- The move comes against a background of a bitter controversy about the reported dubious health condition of the Sudanese sheep according to several officials of the agriculture Ministry in Algiers.
- However, this was later strongly denied by Sudan’s Ambassador to Algiers who argued in a statement to the press that the Sudanese sheep were not affected by any disease or ailment and were good for consumption.
- As a result, the agriculture ministry has dispatched a team of vets to Sudan to ascertain on the spot whether the Sudanese sheep are safe or not for consumption in order to put a definitive end to the ongoing controversy between the two sides.
- In spite of the current row and its fall-outs, several private economic operators are said to have secretly traveled to Sudan to pave the way for the import of large quantities of Sudanese meat in expectation of the upcoming summer season and the holy month of fasting of Ramadhan without waiting for the prior green light from the relevant authorities.
