Protests against Gaza attacks in Algiers

Hundreds of people took to the streets in the Algerian capital Algiers after Friday’s prayer in to protest against Israeli strikes on Gaza.

  • The protestors who were walking from Ennour mosque located in a popular area in Algiers called for standing by Gaza and breaking the Arab silence on the Israeli offensive.
  • At least 421 Palestinians were killed in the seven-day Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.
  • The demonstrators led by Islamists were stopped by anti-riot forces in downtown. Meanwhile, people in other areas in Algiers gathered outside mosques to denounce the Israeli strikes.
  • Earlier in December, Algerian MPs protested at the Parliament’s headquarters calling on the National Assembly’s speaker to hold a special session on Gaza attacks.
  • The government banned demonstrations in 2001 following bloody clashes between security forces and protestors in a demonstration organised by Berber activists.
