France was swift to hail the measures announced on Monday by President Bouteflika, first through its Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian and then President Emmanuel Macron, but this somewhat hinted at interference in Algeria’s internal affairs at a time when the official international response has been cautious so far.
Immediately after the announcement of the new measures through the national APS news agency, France 24 Channel quoted French Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian as saying that Paris “welcomes Bouteflika’s decision not to run for a fifth mandate and looks forward to a new dynamic that meets the aspirations of the Algerian people.”
Yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron reacted to the event and said his country hailed the decision by the Algerian President to withdraw his candidacy for a fifth term.
In the opinion of observers, President Macron said that the projected national consensual conference will be a new page in the Algerian democracy, pointing out that such a conference should be held within a reasonable period of time and should have an efficient role in putting forth sound constitutional proposals.
“Algerian youth knew how to express their hopes for change with dignity and President Bouteflika’s decision opens a new chapter for Algerian democracy. We will be with the Algerians in this new phase with all friendship and respect,” President Macron said in his Twitter account.
For his part, Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki also commented on the events unfolding in Algeria and hailed President Bouteflika’s decision not to stand as a candidate for a fifth mandate.
“Congratulations to the great Algerian people, congratulations for their peaceful democratic Revolution,” he said in a tweet on his Facebook account.
