Algerian presidential elections turnout in the province of Tizi Ouzou (100 km east of Algiers) was estimated at 30.75 percent while the area is known for being the stronghold of the opposition which called for boycott.

  • The elections turnout was deemed high compared to 18.34 percent in 2004 elections. Independent candidate Abdelaziz Bouteflika received then 27.88 percent of votes cast.
  • In 2009’s elections, Bouteflika got 85 percent of voters while candidate Louisa Hanoun, leader of the Workers’ Party was second with 9 percent followed by Mohamed Said and Moussa Touati with about 2 percent. Djahid Younsi and Fouzi Rebaine received 1 percent.
  • Residents expressed their delight in Tizi Ouzou’s streets following the announcement of the poll. They shouted enthusiastic slogans in favour of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
