Sahel Region Crisis: Another Problem threatening Algeria

Due to the crisis which is gripping in the neighboring countries, Algeria looks like a floating island in the middle of a stormy ocean, which is buffeted by waves from each side, as the expected international military intervention in northern Mali, and the lack of clarity of relations with Morocco, is considered one of the most dangerous files that need to be dismantled in the calm.

After the Libyan crisis, came the statements of the Moroccan King Mohammed VI, marking the 37 th of what Rabat calls, the “green march”, to deepen a sense of lack of confidence between the two countries, especially since these statements coincided with escalating great unrest on the southern borders, with deploying superpowers for their efforts to internationalize the Malian crisis, which looks more artificial.

After monitoring the developments of reality on the ground, we find that it indicates that the first and last target , of what is prepared regionally, is Algeria, which is the continent of independent decisions, and which was able to get out of its bitter security crisis, as what is known as the “Arab Spring”, which erupted in a lot of Arab countries, including neighboring, failed to reach it, but it remains in the eye of the hurricane.

Even the only neighbor which expressed in more than one occasion its commitment to the principle of good-neighborliness, Tunisia, was also living difficult period of transition, and has become threatened in internal stability, facing the repercussions of the post-revolutionary system against the fugitive dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, which means that the eastern borders of the country remain unstable.
In turn, the southeastern borders corresponding to Libya, is an obsession, too, and its control constitutes a drain on the capacity of the security and military institutions, because of the proliferation of thousands of pieces of weapons from the barracks of Gaddafi, with the continuing internal security crisis, which reached even the physical liquidation, iwthout negelecting Algeria’s hard position since the outbreak of the crisis, proceeding from the principle of non-interference in the affairs of others and rejecting the foreign military intervention, which has not been accepted by a lot of politicians and the elite in Libya.
The case was the same for the crisis in the Sahel region, which has become the most dangerous, as the great powers did their best to involve Algeria in a war, in which it has no interest or gains.

An expert in strategies, and a professor of political science at Algiers University, Dr. Ahmad Azimi, said that he Moroccan king’s remarks about Algeria, is an attempt to influence the Algerian position on the issue of Western Sahara, which is a source of dispute between the two countries.
