Sarkozy may return to Algerian to convince Bouteflika

The French president, Nicholas Sarkozy expressed his readiness to fly to Algeria in a bid to convince his Algerian counterpart, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, to take part in the Paris summit announcing the creation of the Mediterranean Union.

• The French newspaper Le Parisien Wednesday reported that Sarkozy’s move was a last ditch effort to try change the Algerian president’s mind and withdraw a “yes” from his part to participate in the summit.
• The project triggered huge media uproar in which most of the experts raised the problem of uncertainty regarding the project in case of an Algerian veto, stressing the importance of this country strategically and politically.
• Some media close to the right trend linked the participation of the French president in the summit, to the position of the Islamic and conservative parties regarding this project.
