Security report: Gendarmerie dismantled 282 criminal cells and seized 179 arms since the beginning of 2009
Services of the National Gendarmerie thwarted 316 attempts to smuggle arms and war ammunition during the first six months of this year.

They seized 91 weapons and 2872 bullets as well as about 9 kg of gun powder and arrested 391 traffickers including 179 women now in prison.

A security report by the media cell of the national gendarmerie shows that there is a large decline in the number of cases of smuggling weapons and the number of the arrested people as well as the seized quantities.

The security report, available to Echorouk, also shows that the series of raids and control operations on individuals and vehicles by the gendarmerie play a big role in reducing the activities of the criminal cells during the first three months of 2009, according to the declined number of cases with 81.7% compared to the first six months of 2008 and more than 11% for the number of detainees who were involved in these cases.

Previously, gendarmerie treated 13317 cases of criminality and detained 6717 people out of 17636 arrested, mostly robbers and involved in cases of assault and forms of smuggling. They also dismantled 282 criminal gangs involved in car theft and falsification, and recovered 141 vehicles and arrested 215 involved.

The border guards realised record levels in the field of seizing drugs during the first six months of 2009 through seizing about 16 tons of drugs with a volume of +214.27% compared to the same period of last year, mostly in Bechar and Tindouf, South of Algeria, as well as seizing over 10.000 hallucinating drugs and 295 opium plants.

The national gendarmerie arrested 2277 illegal immigrants during three months, mostly from Nigeria.

However, the number of Moroccans arrested in Algeria rises with 77.59% after it was discovered that they work in smuggling cells because of poverty in their homeland.
