Semolina prices out of control despite executive decree

With the aim to curb the frenzy of prices, the Algerian government has decided to subsidize the basic food commodities including semolina which is regarded as the one of the most strategic goods in the Algerian society.

  • A ministerial meeting was held especially to discuss the matter and wound up with the issue of an executive decree limiting the price of the normal semolina to 3600 Algerian Dinars the quintal and 4000 Algerian Dinars for the super one as of January 2008.

  • Four years after, the price of semolina is still above the ceiling set up by the authorities all over the country.

  • Helpless in front of this situation, the trade ministry has acknowledged that the prices of the semolina has exceeded the limit set by the Algeria authorities and called on the citizens to inform about the cases of infringement.

  • Taking to, Echourouk the spokesman of the ministry Farouk Tifour has admitted that prices have skyrocketed” You are right” noting that the elements of the ministry in charge of the control of the prices will retaliate”.
