As soon as they realize that you are Algerian they surround you to express their love and admiration for the Algerian people and the country alike… Those are the inhabitants of Oumderman, Sudan who reserved a hearty welcome for the Algerian fans during the play off match that took place last November against Egypt as apart of the qualifiers for the world cup competition.

They declare with spontaneity that they supported the Algerian national squad and were looking forward for their victory, and when we ask about the reason behind this surge of tenderness for the Algerians instead of the Egyptians despite their geographical proximity, they would answer it’s because the common religious and language background but would tell you also that the Algerian people is very similar to the Sudanese one.

Most of the people that I talked to in Oumderman and more specifically those who I met in the frenetic market in the city center , still recall the day where they rushed to the stadium to watch the match that ended by a victory in favour of the “Greens” that secured them a berth in the South African world cup.

At this time they waved the Algerian flags and chanted the famous slogan” One .. Two.. Three.. Viva L’Algérie”.

Actually, I have noticed that most of the Sudanese love too much Algeria, to an extent that one of them has informed me that he was working hard to save money in order to move to South Africa in a bid to support the Algerian National squad during this competition, though the task will not be easy because of his extremely delicate financial situation.

In the market, Tarek Abdeladhim (35) was overwhelmed by joy when he discovered that I was Algerian and invited me in his small shop to treat me. He seized this opportunity to talk about the “good days” referring to the match and indicated that he feels a special love for Algeria and didn’t know why.

He went on saying that the stadium’s bleachers were filled to capacity with the Sudanese fans who gave up their activities in order to attend the match. He also asserted that he witnessed that events in the wake of the match and qualified the Egyptian media campaign against the Algerian fans as slander.

Tarek has insisted to wish the best of luck for the Algerian national squad in their quality as the first Arab representative in this prestigious competition.

For his part, Sadek Ahmed Mohammed Ali, a man in his fifties, didn’t hide his admiration for the Algerian people since he met them and lived in their company in the United Sates. He has declared that the inhabitants of Oumderman played the host for the Algerian fans during two days and were admirably suprized by their irreproachable behaviour.
