Survey:The purchasing power of the Algerians has retreated by 10 % in 2010
Estimates released by the trade registers’ services as well as the trade departments across the different Algerian provinces, have revealed that illegal trade has shrank by 20% over the year 2010 in the wake of the latest measures issued by the interior ministry that tightened the grip over this illegal business, so did the exchange of counterfeited goods which slumped by 30% at the moment where the purchasing power of the Algerians has retreated by 10%.
- The survey has highlighted the role of the local authorities in the execution of the ministry’s instruction with the use, sometimes, of force to forbid these illegal activities on the public squares, instead of rehabilitating disused commercial places and erecting brand new markets in order to absorb hundreds of salesmen and integrate them in the legal business.
- The trade ministry’s stringent measures have curbed the “invasion” of counterfeited goods imported from abroad including cars spare parts by 30% and other strategic food stuffs like milk powder and medicines.
- The estimates have indicated that the number of retailers and wholesalers has hiked by 5% over the year 2010 passing from 1.3 million to 1.5 million most of them operate in the capital city Algiers, with 180 thousands.
- These services have suspended some 20 thousand businessmen due to misdemeanours while 50 thousands have voluntarily frozen their activities to avoid the payment of taxes.
