Swine flu kills two people in Algeria

Two people died of swine flu in the province of Tizi Ouzou (100 km east of Algiers). Of them, a pregnant woman, influenza laboratory director told Echorouk on Thursday.

“The swine flu came from many countries which experience the pandemic. Kuwait, Palestine, Tunisia and many other countries reported that a number of its people caught the virus,” Doctor Fouzi Derar said.
He added that the influenza laboratory at Pasteur Institute in Algiers has regularly received samples of 40 swine flu cases since January 2013. Two cases are serious and are analyzed.
The laboratory director warned of contamination in the month of February as it is the “flu peak” due to weather change. “Other people may die of it.”
He called on people who suffer from chronic diseases, old persons, children and pregnant women to be careful and avoid people affected by the flu. They should wash their hands with soap because “property is a fatal arm against flu.”
Speaking about the virus, Doctor Derar said it came back after four years and it threatens many people in different countries.
In 2009, the World Health Organization declared the new strain of swine-origin H1N1 as a pandemic. In spite of prevention measures, the virus continued killing hundreds people before it had stopped. Yet, it came back early in 2013.
Some symptoms of swine flu are similar to ordinary influenza. Yet, people affected by the H1N1 virus suffer from sudden high temperature, cough, painful muscles, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting.
